College is more than just academics …..
College is the beginning of a new chapter in your life.
A new freedom you never had before. You get to make your own decisions, make your own way. You get to explore new things. See what interests you have that maybe you never knew you had before. Explore the next four years with open eyes. See how you can grow as a person. Understand that with that comes great reasonability on your part.
As you have made your class schedule and found where your classes are, remember to truly engage yourself in class. Ask a question if you have one. Remember that no question is a dumb question so ask it if you have one. Your professors will like that you’re engaged in class. Join study groups. It’s a great way for you to meet students and make new friends with similar interest as you, not to mention you’re getting study time in.
Explore your interests.
Extra-curricular activities are something you should thing about. You not only have sports, there are all sort of clubs to join. What things interest you? Cooking? Dancing? Chess? Theater? Engineering? Music? Where you in your debate club in high school? Colleges have them too. What about social awareness clubs or culture-specific clubs? There are all types of clubs with things you may have an interest in and more. You may even want to explore something outside the box and see what else you may like, but you never know it until you join that club. Do not be scared to try new things. College is a great time to explore your interest and try new things. It’s also a great way to socialize, make new friends and start networking.
Explore the exchange programs.
Have you ever thought about traveling? There are many programs out there that offer study abroad programs. You could actually travel to a foreign country during your college years. Have you ever thought about going to Spain? If you’re taking Spanish for your foreign language in college you may want to think about going on an abroad program to Spain. What better place to learn Spanish and improve your Spanish, but in Spain. Many colleges have a six-week programs. Look to see if your college has one. There are engineering programs that have a semester in places like Paris and there is even an abroad program at a medieval 12th century castle in the Italian Alps. Look into your school’s abroad programs. The world is waiting for you to explore it and as a young college student there is no better time than now.
Utilize the college’s resources.
Remember that all colleges have resources to help you fulfill your dreams, but they do not come to you, you have to go to them. Start living your dream. Not sure what your dream is? It’s okay. Take classes you know you’re interested in and some you have no clue if you would like. You may surprise yourself. This is where you find out who you are. Join clubs and social groups. Meet new people. Explore the world around you. Seek and you shall find who you truly are along the way. College is a wonderful path to finding out who that is, but be wise and study too. While there is more than just academics in college remember that is the key reason you are there.
