What is a second career?
A second career is any career a person moves into after already beginning and starting a different career.
An example, someone who has worked their entire adult life in the construction industry now decides to pursue post-secondary education and start training for a new career in the finance industry. This would be considered a second career.
When is it the right time to start a second career?
It is a big step for nearly everyone to drop the only career they have ever known to start their second career fresh in a field they may have little to no previous experience in. Yet, there are many reasons why people pursue second careers. Job satisfaction, better wages and benefits, job advancement opportunities or eliminating long working hours away from family.
The truth is people decide to change careers for a variety of reasons. And there is no wrong reason for someone to decide to move on. But when is the right time to do so?
There is never a perfect time for anybody to make a major life decision. A person will always have prior commitments; some feel they need them resolved before moving on. You can always find a reason not to … but you need to find the reason why you should .. and go for it. Make a list of pros and cons. If the pros outweigh the cons, you have your answer.
