Program Overview
The Diploma in Business Co-op Path courses provide practical skills and theoretical business knowledge
employers need. The Diploma in Business Co-op covers the main aspects of business including
management, human resources, economics, and administration. It will equip students with an awareness
of key issues and practices within a changing business environment.

Full-time duration: 80 weeks / 2 Years
Homework hours: 10-15 hours per week.
Attendance Expectations: Students are required to maintain their attendance as per the FC attendance policy.
Graduation Requirements: To graduate, students must successfully complete all courses with minimum C grade (50% to 59%).
University Progression: The Diploma in Business can provide advanced entry to an undergraduate degree-level study or a masters level degree program. The Diploma in Business can also provide advanced entry to the University of the Fraser Valley. Please contact an Admissions Advisor for further information.
Program Organization: Diploma in Business program consists of two years.
This program has been approved by the Private Training Institutions Regulatory Unit (PTIRU) of the Ministry of Post-Secondary Education and Future Skills. This program is not eligible for PGWP. Course Curriculum
Business Accounting — 160 hrs
This Course is designed to enable students to develop their knowledge and understanding in the preparation and use of accounting information within a business organization. Students will develop the skills required to prepare basic financial and management accounting reports and, in addition, will also develop the skills, knowledge and understanding to enable them to interpret and use financial information for decision making.
Business Law: An Introduction — 80 hrs
This Course is designed to introduce the student to the framework of law as it applies within the business environment. The Course will examine the sources of Canadian law, the contractual relationships between individuals, the contractual relationships between individuals and businesses, and the distinction between types of business relationships. It is primarily intended for students who require knowledge of legal matters in a business context.
Communication: Business Communication — 80 hrs
This Course Communication: Business Communication is designed to develop skills in analyzing, summarizing, evaluating, and producing complex written business information. It also develops skills in presenting and responding to complex oral business information.
The Course enhances skills for learning, life and work and there is a particular emphasis on employability.
Creating a Culture of Customer Care — 80 hrs
The purpose of this Course is to enable students to recognize and evaluate effective customer care within a relevant work environment. It allows students to analyze factors affecting customer care and to judge the effectiveness of a customer care strategy by applying them to the workplace. The Course emphasizes that customer care is a key area of importance and value to organizations and is, therefore, critical to the work of any employee.
Economic Issues: An Introduction — 80 hrs
This Course introduces students to fundamental issues in economics with a particular emphasis on the business environment. Students will learn about the basic economic problem and how the consumer and other economic agents address this problem. Students are introduced to the operation of markets and actions that can be taken to help avoid market failure. The Course introduces the theory of National Income and the circular flow of income model.
Economics 1: Micro & Macro Theory and Application — 80 hrs
This Course is designed to build on students’ knowledge of introductory economics and expose them to microeconomic and macroeconomic applications of theory. The course allows the introduction of current issues in economics and provides an opportunity for students to analyze and evaluate these issues.
Human Resource Management: Introduction — 80 hrs
This introductory Course is intended for students who may wish to gain a holistic overview of how Human Resource Management can add value to an organization. It is designed to develop knowledge of the role of Human Resource Management as a key function within organizations and to develop understanding of the background to the development of the discipline of Human Resource Management. It introduces students to the activities that make up Human Resource Management and how these activities contribute to the success of an organization.
Information Technology: Applications Software 1 — 80 hrs
This course is designed to enable students to use Information Technology (IT) systems and applications independently to support a range of information processing activities. The course is designed to develop a broad knowledge of the theoretical concepts, principles, boundaries and scope of IT applications. These activities will be centered on using software applications packages to meet complex information requirements while paying attention to security and the needs of other users.
IT in Business: Spreadsheets — 80 hrs
This Course is designed to allow students to develop an understanding of spreadsheet design and how to use spreadsheet features and functions for practical and effective use. It is relevant to students wishing to develop their knowledge of spreadsheets as a tool to help provide solutions to common business problems.
Managing People and Organizations — 160 hrs
This Course is designed to enable students to gain an understanding of different approaches to managing an organization in today’s dynamic and complex business environment. It will introduce students – whether intending to or working in an administrative, commercial or management role – to current management theories to enable them to use these to evaluate organizational effectiveness.
Marketing: An Introduction — 80 hrs
This Course is designed to provide students with a knowledge and understanding of marketing and its importance in organizations. This Course is also designed to develop students’ understanding of the marketing mix in the context of both products and services. This is an introductory Course which can be used by students who may wish to progress to more specialized marketing courses.
Personal Development Planning — 80 hrs
This course helps students to take responsibility for their own learning and development. It provides a framework for the development of the personal and general skills and qualities which employers seek in the workplace and which are increasingly recognized as underpinning success in personal life, in citizenship and in lifelong learning. The contexts of progression to employment, or from college to university, or developing Core Skills, can be used.
Through a process of Personal Development Planning1 students will identify their skills, abilities and development needs and review these in the context of their own personal, educational and career aims. They will devise a personal action plan, then undertake and evaluate that plan. They will gather, organize an d present evidence of each stage of the plan – including personal reviews – in their personal development portfolio.
Behavioural Skills for Business — 80 hrs
The aim of this course is to develop an understanding of the role of a manager as a leader and some of the key management behavioral skills required to meet an organization’s goals and objectives. It enables students to explain what managerial behavior in organizations involves and to analyze the behavioral skills which managers need to manage their own behavior and also to deal with differences and challenges in the workplace. It enables students to recognize the skills which managers need in order to behave effectively in situations which arise within a dynamic business environment.
While the course is aimed at students who have current experience of working in a position with management responsibilities or those who are returning to management after a break, it is also suitable for those who do not presently have current management experience but have aspirations of taking up a management role in the future.
Preparing Financial Forecasts — 80 hrs
This Course is designed to enable learners to develop an understanding of the use of management accounting information within a business organization. It provides learners with the skills required to prepare basic management accounting reports. In addition, the Course will also enable learners to learn the financial techniques used for making decisions in relation to costing and budgeting, pricing and investments.
Statistics for Business — 80 hrs
This Course introduces student to statistical concepts and descriptive statistics used in business.
The Course will provide student with the underpinning knowledge and skills required to use statistical and graphical techniques to address business problems using appropriate IT software.
Business: Graded Unit 1 — 80 hrs
This course is designed to provide evidence that students have met the following:
• Provide the competencies required by employers of those engaged in entry level administrative, managerial or commercial positions in organizations.
• Develop and apply a range of vocational knowledge and skills in an integrated manner to the analysis of business situations.
• Build on previously acquired transferable skills.
• Adopt an innovative and creative approach to their work and be able to respond quickly to the challenges posed by changes in the business environment.
Co‑op — 1440 hrs
Admission Requirements
- Grade 12 (or equivalent) Canadian high‑school credential OR
- Relevant professional experience / mature‑student status
Applicants must provide proof of English language proficiency through any one of the following:
- Completion of 2 years of secondary education (including English 10 and 11 with a grade of ‘C’ or higher) from a country where English is one of the principal languages
- Completion of 2 years of full-time post-secondary education at an accredited institution where English is the language of instruction
- An English Language Proficiency Test with one of the following minimum scores:
- International English Testing (IELTS) Academic: Minimum overall score of 6.0
- Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) IBT: Minimum overall score of 67 (TOEFL-Home test not accepted).
- Canadian English Proficiency Index Program (CELPIP): Listening 7, Speaking 7, Reading 7, and Writing 7
- Duolingo English Test: Minimum overall score of 105
- Pearson Test of English (PTE) Academic: Minimum overall score of 52
