Dental office administrators keep a dental clinic running. They book appointments, greet patients, manage records, handle billing and insurance, and keep the front desk organized. In BC you don’t need a licence to do this job. Most employers look for a high school diploma plus a dental or medical office certificate, along with good computer and communication skills.
Do you need a licence?
No. Dental office administrators and dental receptionists are not a regulated profession in BC.
This is different from dental assistants, who work chairside with the dentist. Dental assistants must be licensed with the BC College of Oral Health Professionals before they can practise. The College regulates six professions: dentists, dental hygienists, dental therapists, dental technicians, denturists and licensed dental assistants. Dental office administration is not one of them.
So if you want to work at the front desk rather than chairside, you can start without a licence.
What employers look for
- High school graduation. WorkBC lists completion of secondary school as a requirement for receptionists.
- A related certificate or diploma. WorkBC says most medical administrative assistant positions also require one, including dental office assistant programs.
- Dental software skills. Postings often name practice management software. One recent BC posting asked for experience with Cleardent.
- Experience. Some clinics ask for previous front desk experience. A recent North Vancouver posting asked for one year as a dental receptionist.
- Extra certificates. WorkBC lists Occupational First Aid Level 1, CPR Level C and WHMIS as certifications for this field, and says a typing speed of 50 words per minute or more is useful.
- People skills. You’re the first person patients talk to, often when they’re nervous or in pain.
What does the job pay in BC?

How to become a dental office administrator: step by step
- Finish high school or an equivalent. Mature students can often enter training programs without it.
- Take a dental office training program. Look for one that covers dental terminology, infection control, scheduling and billing, and hands-on practice with dental software.
- Learn the software. Clinics use practice management systems for appointments, charts and insurance claims. Practical experience gives you an edge.
- Add first aid and CPR if the clinics you’re applying to ask for them.
- Get front desk experience. Reception, customer service or medical office work all count.
- Apply to dental clinics. Look at general and specialty practices across BC. Job titles to search for include dental receptionist, dental office administrator, dental administrative assistant and treatment coordinator.
