About Abbotsford

Abbotsford is a city located in British Columbia, adjacent to the Canada–United States border, Greater Vancouver and the Fraser River. With an estimated population of 141,397 people it is the largest municipality in the province outside Metro Vancouver. Abbotsford-Mission has the third highest proportion of visible minorities among census metropolitan areas in Canada, after the Greater Toronto Area and the Greater Vancouver CMA. It is home to Tradex, the University of the Fraser Valley, and Abbotsford International Airport.

As of the 2016 census, it is the largest municipality of the Fraser Valley Regional District and the fifth-largest municipality of British Columbia. The Abbotsford–Mission metropolitan area of around 180,518 inhabitants as of the 2016 census is the 23rd largest census metropolitan area in Canada. It has also been named by Statistics Canada as Canada's most generous city in terms of charitable donations for nine straight years.


Sajjad Ali CEO

After obtaining degrees in Computer Sciences and Electronics Engineering, and working in the industry for several years, Sajjad went on to launch Optyyl Technologies, an IT Business in the UK.  With a passion for education, he purchased Lincolns College in the UK and then Focus College in Canada. Sajjad was instrumental in bringing a standardized system of education to Canada. 

In 2017, Sajjad joined CanScribe Career College and co-launched Weave Enterprises, a start-up tech company which uses the resources of Optyyl Technologies. His passion for charitable work and helping others motivated him to co-found HELPUS.CARE with his business partner; a charity which focuses on Health, Education, Loans and Protection, to those in need around the world.

Colleen Chapman President

Colleen’s background is both in finance and marketing. After working for several years in the ad agency biz, she founded CanScribe in 2002, Docnito in 2010, joined Focus College in 2016 and co-founded Weave Enterprises in 2017.  Away from the office, Colleen enjoys hiking in the Okanagan and playing different sports. She loves to travel and especially enjoys experiencing different cultures, exploring new lands and meeting the locals.

Passionate about volunteer work and giving back, Colleen spent 12 years coaching youth soccer, has sat on various non-profit boards, and has been involved in Angel investing. She has volunteered in orphanages and travelled to Nepal twice to build schools and sponsor micro-loans for women in need. Colleen and her business partner started their own charity called HELPUS.CARE, which focuses on Health, Education, Loans and Protection, around the globe.

Brian Schumacher Director of Academics and Partnerships

New to Kelowna, but not new to post-secondary education, our new Director of Academics & Partnerships, Brian Schumacher brings with him over 20 years of post-secondary and senior leadership experience. While at the University of Regina’s Paul J. Hill School of Business, Brian taught a number of courses at the undergraduate and graduate level and also developed and delivered numerous executive training seminars. Brian also took on a leadership position within the faculty having been thrice appointed as Associate Dean (Undergraduate). 

While in the Associate Dean role, Brian worked to establish and strengthen exchange partnerships with peer institutions in China, Central America, and Europe.  Brian’s experience in pursuing accreditation while at the Hill School will also augment our efforts to continue and further existing Focus College accreditation and pursue partnerships to expand the opportunities for the College and our students.

Hassan Tariq Chattha (PhD, PMP, SMIEEE, MIET) Director of Accreditation and Engineering Technologies

Hassan received his Ph.D. and Post-Doctoral Fellowship in Electrical Engineering from the University of Liverpool, UK. He has more than 16 years of experience comprising of higher-education teaching, high-tech research, industrial experience, academic administration and management services as Head of Department, curriculum development, human resource development, strategic planning development & implementation, quality assurance & compliance, academic accreditation, and setting-up new academic departments from scratch including new laboratory set-ups. He has worked in four different countries including Canada, the UK, Saudi Arabia, and Pakistan which has exposed him to a wide range of perspectives, experiences, and cultures and a demonstrated commitment to improving access to higher education for under-represented groups.

Hassan has more than 4 years of administration and management experience of academic programs, contributing to their development, assessment, and management, and is actively involved in the accreditation process related to Washington Accord and ABET (USA) accreditations. He is also experienced in the assessment and evaluation processes related to Outcome-Based Education (OBE) and is an expert in defining course learning outcomes, specific performance criteria and the development of rubrics.

Hassan has published more than 70 articles in leading international impact factor journals and peer-reviewed international conferences. He is a Senior Member of IEEE and a member of IET. He is an active reviewer for more than 20 different journals including many reputed IEEE and IET journals. He has been an Associate Editor of IEEE Access since 2017 and has hosted several special issues as Lead/Guest Editor. He is an active researcher in pedagogy, learning and continuous quality improvement and has published numerous articles on developing innovative learning strategies including problem-based learning methods, teaching methodologies, and continuous quality improvement framework.

Kaye Bedford Controller & HR

With a professional background in Business Management and Project Management, Kaye brings forth over ten years of experience in accounting, project environment, full cycle bookkeeping, managing small businesses, as well as consulting.

Outside of work, Kaye volunteers and believes that kindness is a crucial component of this world and that laughter is the best medicine! Amongst other things, she plays beach volleyball, rides her road bike, plays guitar, and enjoys salsa dancing and singing. 

Jorge Junior Admissions Representative

Leveraging over eight years of experience in International Education, Jorge is a flexible professional with multi-faceted skills in management, client services, international relations, and activity coordination. Work as Admissions Advisor for Focus College allows Jorge to use his contacts to achieve significant international education growth in British Columbia and worldwide.

Zoe Huang Admissions Representative

Zoe has a passion for technology and education. She taught telecommunications in China, Pakistan, the Philippines, Germany and West Africa with Huawei Learning Services, prior to coming to Canada. She completed her Master’s Degree in Educational Psychology in Canada. The story of her enthusiasm in Technology and Education is featured on the University of Victoria’s Education Department website. In her spare time, Zoe likes singing, cooking, hanging out with friends, and exploring beautiful British Columbia.

Joshua Ajayi IT Support

Josh Graduated from University with a Degree in Computer Science with Economics. He worked for 3 years as a Network and System Administrator for an oil and gas servicing company before moving to Canada to continue his career journey.

Josh works as the IT Support Specialist at Focus College and is always willing to take on new projects and help out in different departments, as the needs arise. 

Allan Holbrook Software Development Instructor/Lead

Allan has been working in Information Technology for more than 30 years. After graduating from the University of British Columbia, he quickly became accomplished as a highly respected systems software specialist. In the last 20 years, Allan ran his own start-up venture, provided architectural services to several large organizations and designed some of the most complex database solutions in the industry.

"It is truly one of the most rewarding careers to be in. But to be successful in this industry, you must consistently dedicate time to always be learning new languages, processes, technologies and trends."

Through Focus College, Allan enjoys teaching the next generation of students how his passion for a career in technology can be theirs as well. He brings years of experience in so many different areas and is privileged to be able to help build Focus College's reputation as a provider of outstanding globally recognized education.

David Worthington Bylaw Instructor

David started his bylaw career pounding the pavement with the City of Vancouver parking enforcement department.

He then took his talents to the bylaw department at the District of North Vancouver, dealing with bylaws ranging from Construction, Noise, Waste, Environmental, Property Use and more.

Currently, David resides in Victoria and is part of the bylaw team for the Islands Trust, a special purpose government mandated to preserve and protect over 450 Islands in the Salish Sea.

Angelo Stradiotto Bylaw Instructor

Angelo Stradiotto has been working in Law Enforcement for over 24 years and has held many different positions within his career. He has worked with both BC Corrections and BC Sheriffs Service as well as working for the Delta Police Department and finally settling in the Okanagan with Commercial Vehicle Safety Enforcement and with the West Kelowna Bylaw department. Angelo has experience instructing at the Justice Institute and internally with various agencies. He is an avid soccer player and holds both his certified coaching and refereeing certificates. He enjoys his time away from work with his wife and young son as well as riding his motorcycle whenever he can get away.

Alaina Podmorow Sales and Marketing

Alaina Podmorow is a graduate of the University of British Columbia, completing her Bachelor's of Arts degree in International Relations. During her studies, she also attended the Universidade de Santigo de Compostela in Spain and Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin in Germany. Alaina worked in the non-profit sector for more than a decade after founding Little Women for Little Women in Afghanistan, which focused on the development of education opportunities for Afghan women and girls. Prior to joining the Focus College team, Alaina took on a leadership position in administration, IT, marketing, and web design, acting as Creative Director. 

When she is not working, Alaina spends her time with family and friends or adventuring in her own backyard. Most of all, she loves to travel the world – in the last five years, Alaina has visited 15 countries!

Alaina’s passion has always been education – whether it be as an advocate for others or as a forever-learner herself. Alaina’s position of Sales and Marketing Coordinator for Focus College allows her to bring together her interests in knowledge, academia, international relations, and communication.

Ausra Jarmantaviciute Administration

Master’s Degree in International Marketing and Trade from Vilnius University, Lithuania. On top of international studies, she has achieved a Postgraduate Intensive Diploma in International Hotel Management at Les Roches Marbella, Spain. As for her work experiences, she has been a business process manager for an international transport company for more than a decade. Simultaneously she has worked in sales for multinational company Lidl (UK). Additionally, she has contributed herself as the management team for the hotel industry and worked at a luxury 5-star hotel group Kempinski Hotels S. A. Ausra has joined Focus College to contribute her attitude, international knowledge & network in order to build the bridges for students to reach their desired continents.

Prem Parkash Bharti Marketing

Mr. Prem Parkash Bharti has been educated in Australia and having over 22 years of experience of International Marketing. Widely travelled worldwide for exploring business possibilities for joint venture, collaboration, and services in different sectors. Having stint in-depth overseas education, in 1993 the company was founded by him to promote education across the world at various levels. He is also one of the few who qualified the “Education UK Certificate for Agents’ course offered by British Council and British High Commission at New Delhi, NZ Education Trainned Counsellor by ENZ, Canada Course for Education Agents (CCEA) and US Agent Training Course USATC by ICEF.

Focus College response to Covid-19

Due to the current pandemic and the desire to protect the health of our students, Focus College is taking measures which incorporate social isolation.

For current students:

We are suspending our Advanced Diploma and Office Manager courses for the week of March 16-20th, to allow for temporary distance learning to be set up. If any students do not have access to a computer from home, we request that they notify the college immediately. Further information on how courses will be delivered will be available as the week goes on. Please monitor your student email for further information throughout the week.
